The Australian SHOT Expo is derived from the U.S. SHOT Show with the U.S. version running for the past 27 years and growing significantly each year. In 2003 the SSAA decided to run an Australian version and the SHOT Expo was born.
The 2005 & 2006 SHOT Expos were both held in Sydney and were a success by anyone's standards. In 2005 over 6,000 people attended with exhibitors and visitors alike commenting on the professionalism of the event and how numbers had far exceeded their expectations. Some exhibitors had even sold all their stock on the first day and having to urgently call for back up supplies. Perhaps the best indicator of success was the amount of exhibitors saying that they would be back again in 2006, with most doing so.
The 2006 Expo moved from its 2005 venue in Homebush to the Sydney International Shooting Centre at Cecil Park, home of the shooting events at the 2000 Olympics. This move enabled the SSAA to combine the SHOT Expo with Australia's biggest "Try Shooting" day with over 5,000 people having the opportunity to experience pistol, rifle and shotgun shooting. Highlights included receiving lessons at the Beretta shotgun range with Australian coach Greg Chan and Olympic Gold Medallist Russell Mark, and a visit from Australian cricket legend Glenn McGrath.
- Over 50,000 promotional pamphlets distributed promoting the Expo to the general public, SSAA members, retail outlets and other shooting clubs and associations.
- Over 300 radio adverts on Melbourne radio promoting the Expo, shooting and hunting.
- 80 exhibitors taking over 180 booths.
- Representatives from dozens of associated industries attended
- Over 8,000 paying visitors to the 2 days.
- Bi-partisan support from other shooting clubs and associations.
